lake tinaroo (tinaroo dam)
Freshwater Lure, Bait & Fly fishing - Home to World Record Barramundi!!
Lake Tinaroo is the recreation hub of the tropical Tablelands, situated approximately 90 km west of Cairns - just over an hours drive away and if you are serious about catching a record barramundi then you have to give Tinaroo a shot!!

no longer a secret!

The dam was constructed on the Barron River in 1953 to provide water for irrigation purposes to the surrounding farming districts and to supplement the water moving through the Barron Gorge Hydro-electricity Station. It is now one of the three largest water storages in Queensland and is a favourite holiday spot for fishing and boating enthusiasts.

Barramundi fingerlings were introduced to the lake years ago and with such a diverse amount of food and fabulous fishing environments within the lake (ie weed beds, rocky inlets and quiet bays) have now grown into monster fish and the recent incredible barramundi catches are proving Lake Tinaroo to be an increasingly popular barramundi hot spot for visiting Australian and international anglers alike.

The lake is also home to sooty grunter and tasty crayfish known as red claw - which are always popular with the local anglers.

We definitely recommend that you fish with a professional guide who know the lake intimately, as the Tinaroo barra are well known for their challenging characteristics (ie they can be fat and lazy) !! These guides will also recommend preferred times for the best possible chance of that record fish - the timing and conditions are important.

Early morning and late afternoon/early evening is the best time for targeting the Tinaroo barra and we guarantee that you'll appreciate the fabulous sunrises and sunsets over the lake whilst flicking a lure or fly!! Excellent photo opportunities to be had.

A great fishing spot for the serious fishermen and women and a top fishing holiday destination for the family with kids.
